American International College, also known as simply AIC, is a private, co-educational liberal-arts college located in the Mason Square neighborhood of Springfield, which is the county seat of Hampden County, in the US state of Massachusetts, having a population estimated at a number of more than 150 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the largest city on the Connecticut River, the third largest city in the state and the fourth largest in New England. Springfield is also known as The City of Homes and The City of Firsts.
AIC was founded in July, 1885, being chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in September, in the same year, with the purpose of educating international immigrants. The institution was originally established by Rev. Calvin E. Amaron, as the French Protestant College, which had the mission to educate the local French Protestant minority. In 1892, women and other minorities were accepted, and the college started to expend its educational programs.
Currently, AIC is academically organized into 4 schools, which focus on specific academic areas: Arts, Education, and Sciences, Business Administration, Health Sciences and Continuing and Extended Studies.
The athletic teams at American International College are known as the Yellow Jackets, who compete in NCAA Division II, in all the traditional college sports, for both men and women, except for ice hockey, in which the Yellow Jackets compete in Division I Atlantic Hockey Association. Their distinctive colors are black and gold and their mascot is the Yellow Jacket.
Richard Neal, member of the United States Congress, Mike Gravel, former Alaska Senator, Jim Calhoun, Hall of Fame basketball coach, and Richard B. Sellars, who was Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson are among the most resonant names among all of AIC's notable alumni.
